Possible new anti-obesity medicines
There's a new weight-loss drug called Xenical which should be marketed as a weight-loss medication.
But Xenical, which is just under patent, is only available on the NHS, and it's not listed as a treatment for obese people. The prescription is now for the drug with a high potential for misuse, which can lead to addiction and dependence, according to The Guardian.
The drug was developed to lower body weight in a group of people who lost 5kgs or more in the first year of taking the drug.
A study on the use of the drug in people who did not have obesity found that the drug reduced the risk of major cancers such as colon, lung, pancreas and prostate cancers. And in a group of people who had already gained 5kgs or more of weight, the drug had no effect on cancer rates.
The drug, which was launched in 1999, was tested in the study after it was found to have no effect on the risk of prostate cancer.
It's not clear whether the drug could have been passed on to people who were already taking a lower dose of the drug or could have been bought by someone else.
Or it could have been bought from a pharmacy, as some people may have bought the drugs in advance.
In the study, a group of men with obesity were given a drug called Xenical and were asked to make three changes to their daily diet and exercise routine in order to make weight loss better. After four weeks of the drug, a third of the men lost some weight.
The researchers found that the drugs lowered the risk of colorectal, pancreatic and lung cancers, diabetes, and other serious health problems. The drug also reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Xenical should not be used on people with diabetes.
But it's unclear how Xenical will affect a group of people who already have obesity.
Dr David Brown, chairman of the weight-loss medicine group at the University of Liverpool, said: "Orlistat is a prescription-only medication, meaning it doesn't carry the risks of abuse and addiction, so patients should be made aware of the potential dangers."
"The study suggests that patients may be motivated to use Xenical to achieve more weight loss and to reduce the risk of serious health problems," said Dr Brown.
He said Xenical was also used as a treatment for cancer.
The medication has not been found to cause addiction or dependence.
